Prof. Dr. med. Christian Thaler

Prof. Christian J. Thaler, MD, was appointed university professor at the Ludwig Maximilian University Hospital in Munich in 1998, where he headed the Hormone and Fertility Centre until March 2024. Prior to his appointment in Munich, he worked at renowned clinics and institutes in Germany and abroad, including the Center for Reproduction and Tranplantation Immunology, Indianapolis, USA, the Center for Assisted Reproduction, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, the Medical School of Aberdeen, UK, and the Department of Gynaecological Endocrinology at Johann Wolfgang von Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main.

Professor Thaler is an elected member of the Zurich Circle, a German-speaking expert commission on special issues in the field of gynaecological endocrinology and hormonal contraception. He is an appointed member of the "Assisted Reproduction" advisory committee of the Bavarian State Ministry of Health and Care. Professor Thaler is an examiner for the Bavarian State Medical Association in the field of gynaecological endocrinology and reproductive medicine and is an assessor for the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM), Brussels.

Since 2015, Professor Thaler has been Consultant for Reproductive Endocrinology at Songziniao Hospital, a large private clinic in Wuhan, China, specialising in all areas of family planning, assisted reproduction and pregnancy.

From 2012 to 2019, Professor Thaler co-authored the statement ‘Reproductive medicine in Germany - for contemporary legislation’ of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.

In view of his extensive and intensive clinical and scientific activities in the field of reproductive immunology (this medical speciality deals with the role of the immune and coagulation system in the development and course of human pregnancy), Professor Thaler was awarded the title of "Fellow of Clinical Reproductive Immunology" (FCRI) by the American Society of Reproductive Immunology in 2021.  Professor Thaler holds a further international academic title (MIAC) in view of his elected membership of the International Academy of Cytology (IAC).

Professor Thaler's clinical and scientific focus is on ovarian function and its ageing processes and how these are influenced by immunological processes and by trace elements and vitamins. He has worked particularly intensively on the mechanisms of embryonic implantation in the uterus and early pregnancy as well as on disorders of these processes (implantation failure and miscarriages).

Professor Thaler is the author and co-author of numerous books and book contributions and a large number of scientific publications.
